What is a Periodontist?

We Are Proud to Be Your Grande Prairie Periodontist!

What is a Periodontist? A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of periodontal disease. A periodontist also specializes in the replacement of teeth using Dental Implants and Dental Implant Supported Dentures.

Periodontists are a vital part of your dental health team. Healthy gum tissues and bone levels are essential for overall dental health. Without healthy gums and adequate bone, even the healthiest tooth structure can fall victim to periodontal disease. Our dental team will help you understand the types of periodontal disease as well as it’s signs and symptoms of periodontal disease that you should watch for. To accomplish this, Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including a minimum of three additional years of education beyond normal dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and are also trained in performing Cosmetic Periodontal Procedures.

Why Do I Need to See a Periodontist

Patients are referred to see a Periodontist because we are experts in treating more problematic periodontal cases, such as patients with severe gum disease or patients who have a complex medical history. We also offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of the root is cleaned) or root surface debridement (in which damaged tissue is removed). We also treat patients with severe gum problems using a range of periodontal surgical procedures.

During your first visit, we will review your complete medical and dental histories. It is extremely important for us to know if any medications are being taken or if the patient is being treated for any condition that can affect periodontal care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy.

What Happens During My Appointment?

We will examine your gums, and check to see if there is any gum line recession. We will assess how your teeth fit together when biting and check to see if any teeth are loose. We will also take a small measurement of the space between the tooth and the gums to determine the depth of those spaces, known as periodontal pockets. This measurement helps us assess the health of your gums. Digital x-rays may be obtained to observe the health of the bone below the gum line.

After your assessment, we will discuss the treatment plan that best meets your needs. We will always ensure you have all of the information you require in order to make the best decision for your dental health and wellness.

At Peace Periodontics, we always welcome new patients – no referral is required!
